2016Greece – Kerkyra (Corfu)
I am back to Greece for Christmas and New Year. First stop is my home place Kerkyra (Corfu) island. A nice area for birding is located at the south of the island, at Lefkimmi, Alykes. A nice wetland can be found there, where they used to produce salt. The area is now protected by the ecological network Natura 2000.
The Environmental Education Centre of Corfu is operating next to the wetland offering a variety of environmental education programs, workshops and conferences. Apart of the programs, they have opened paths and they have setup few observation points around the wetland making the access easy to everyone. Generally this is a nice and easily accessible birding area with lots of birds throughout the year.
During winter Robins are very common everywhere in Greece and in most cases very friendly allowing some nice closeups; found some of them here too. Stonechat and Blackcap were among my best shots too. A Hen Harrier hovered a while at low height and landed at some distance.
Seabirds that usually can be found here are cormorants, egrets, herons, gulls and ducks. Flamingos also visit this place often, I have spotted few of them during summer and winter too, but a nice photo was not possible this time.
