Saudi Arabia – Tanomah, Al Soudah / May 4-6

On the weekend of May 4-6 I visited the Asir region, at the southwest of Saudi Arabia. Some of the best birding places in Saudi Arabia are there, where can be found the most of the Arabian endemic species.

I spend the afternon of May 4th and whole day of May 5th in Tanomah, Mahvar Park (18.963556, 42.132449 on google maps) and at the Waterfall Dahna (18.910826, 42.207933 on google maps).

Saudi Arabia – Rabigh

We visited today the wadi at Rabigh area with Brian James, Ute Langner and Nils Radecker; Brian drove us to all the good spots there.

Our first stop was the abattoir which is located in that area. It is a place very popular for raptors, mainly Steppe Eagles and Black Kites. Many hundreds of birds can be found there any time; today maybe more than a thousand birds were present.

KAUST – South Beach

I went this morning to the South Beach, early on, before the sunrise. The tide was high and I setup my hide very close to the water, ready for another great birding morning. As soon as the sun rose I was surrounded by a good number of birds. The highlights were a 4 Eurasian Spoonbills and a Common Kingfisher but at such distance that a good shot was not possible.

Saudi Arabia – Tanomah, Al Soudah / 28-30 Oct

On 28-30 Oct we visited the Asir region at the south with my fellow birder Brian James.

We landed to Abha around noon of 28 and from there we drove around 100 km north to Tanomah. Just outside of Tanomah, up on the top of the mountain is located the Al Mehfar Park (Mahvar tourist park on Google maps) and there is located the Mehfar Resort; we stayed there for the first night. We spend the afternoon of 28 and the morning of 29 in the Al Mehfar Park, with the highlight being the Spotted Eagle-Owl (Arabian) that we spotted at dusk of the first day (Oct 28th).
